The Keeler Migraine Method The Keeler Migraine Method
came into being in response to the needs of patients and physicians
who have no access to “brick and mortar” headache help.
“Brick and mortar” refers to a physical building with
a “live” headache specialist. Robert Cowan,
M.D. the site’s developer, first became aware of
this need when he was the Director of the University of Southern
California School of Medicine’s headache program in the Department
of Neurology. He would frequently receive inquiries from patients
and physicians who could not easily come to the clinic in Southern
California. At the time, there was no structure whereby these patients
and doctors could receive help over the internet.
Over the next several years Dr. Cowan followed the development
of the internet and the vast resources for headache sufferers scattered
throughout cyberspace. In 2004, he began the process of developing
a single site on the web where these resources could be brought
together and headache sufferers (along with the people who care
for them) could come for reliable information, support, and direction.
Of course, different headache sufferers have different needs. Some
are fortunate enough to have relatively infrequent headaches and
need only occasional information. For these people, the site offers
a variety of free services, including information on various drugs
and non-medical treatments, tips (called “Pearls”) for
minimizing triggers, etc.
However, for many others, headaches have a significant impact on
their lives and they require much more support. For these patients,
Dr. Cowan developed Migralogue, a monthly “E-zine” (an
electronic magazine which comes to patients via e-mail every month.
Migralogue is filled with articles about headache and its’
management as well as departments looking at the latest research,
answering e-mail letters, reviewing books and interviews with researchers,
clinicians and others working in headache. In addition to Migralogue,
members have direct access to Dr. Cowan and his staff to ask general
questions about headache, find a local clinic or specialist, learn
about the drugs they are taking or explore non-pharmaceutical treatments
such as biofeedback, acupuncture, or herbal remedies.
Finally, for the small minority of headache sufferers who have
no local access to specialized headache care, Dr. Cowan can work
directly, one on one with the headache sufferer and their primary
physician to develop a diagnostic and treatment plan.
As a migraine sufferer himself, Dr. Cowan has both a personal and
professional passion for helping people with disabling headaches.
The Keeler Migraine Method is the product of his long experience
and ongoing research in the field.
